In multiple paragraphs, Thoreau mentions how people are dishonest about their beliefs when it comes to government issues. However, at that time it was highly uncommon for people to rebel. So the question is would people in today's society ever be willing to rebel against a government that they so heavily rely on?
I feel that the government is so essential that many would be fearful more recently to rebel against it. There are too many things that civilians depend on for them to turn against it only because of some minor inconveniences or slight opposing opinions.
ReplyDeleteI believe that in today's society, we are less patriotic and trustworthy of the government, all for good reasons. However, because we don't have as much pride of being an American, we are more apt to act radically. An example of this is the shooting at the 2017 Congressional Baseball Game. The shooter shot the Republican team during their practice and killed one congressman.
ReplyDeleteI both agree and disagree. I feel that people will stand for their families beliefs to no end, but I wouldn't say on political stances. I know that my family has lost connections due to politics, but I also know that if something were to happen to this certain person without a doubt we all would stand with him/her.
ReplyDeleteI think it takes a great deal of bravery to publicly stand against the government and dismiss a law as invalid. Because of these, I feel that it depends on the individual and their personal beliefs. Americans are, as London stated, less patriotic and today they are not filled with that same pride that they once had. Therefore, it is absolutely possible for Americans to defy the government, should the individual be bold enough.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Cassidy. People always want to stand for their families beliefs. Politics, however, can bring families apart because it's hard to stand with anyone who has such fundamental differences.
