If government is inexpedient, then why was it needed in the creation of our country and why is it still in effect today? What would happen if everyone believed government is inexpedient?

In the first paragraph, Thoreau talks about the idea of a less governed government is the best government. Everything is in place for a reason, man/woman, at some point must have wanted a higher advisory to keep an order to things. Now, in 1849, people are seeing the problems and in 2018 we are seeing the problems government can have. Inexpedient means not practical, advisable, or suitable. Which do you think Thoreau meant more?

  1. I think Thoreau was mostly talking about the inefficiencies and wastes of government. Later, in that same paragraph, he says, "The government itself, which is only the mode which the people have chosen to execute their will, is equally liable to be abused and perverted before the people can act through it." I think he says this to highlight that government is generally not "by the people" but what politicians can do unnoticed by the people.

  2. I think that Thoreau was proving a point in the matter that government is a thing that many despise yet are still willing to follow. For instance, towards the middle of Civil Disobediance he speaks of how he went to prison rather than paying tax bills essentially disobeying the rules of something he did not think was correct and didn’t agree with.

  3. I think that Thoreau was trying to say that we need the government, but not to the extent that they try and insert themselves. The government was needed in order to establish some sort of order when the country was first founded. Now, however, there is already order established so the regulation by the government is not needed quite as much.

So basically, the government is a necessary evil; the government is needed to an extent, but at times they "overstep their welcome."

If everyone believed that the government was inexpedient, then the nation would likely try and overthrow the government to create a nation that is free of their control.

  5. Although some could see government immoral I just unsuitable, it is still a structure that is a necessity in everyday life. It has been stated to be a “necessary evil.” This is because not everything is perfect or always preferred, but it is organization that is needed. If everyone believed the government was inexpedient then the organization of the nation would be lost and the government would become obsolete.

  7. Government or some sort of leadership is something that happens naturally. In group projects, someone usually fills in the leadership position, in sports teams there is a captain. Humans simply desire some sense of order and leadership, government just fills in that role on a nationwide scale.

  8. I think Thoreau was saying that government is a necessity but maybe not quite as much of it. The government is not as needed now as it was when, say the country, was first starting out. I agree with what Tyler said, they are needed to establish order, but after so long order is already established and no longer needed to be as present.

  9. I agree with kamryn and Tyler. I think Thoreau was saying that government is definitely needed to establish orders and to create laws for people to follow. However the government tends to involve itself in things it doesn’t need to be involved it. But it’s necessary to prevent chaos.
