More Money = Less Virtue

On page 10, Thoreau says, "Absolutely speaking, the more money, the less virtues; for money comes between a man and his objects, and obtains them for him; and it was certainly no great virtue to obtain it." Does more money actually lower our virtue?

  1. Well, money, value, and virtue are three close things. Man/Woman gives money its value based on what we say. It does not actually have value. If you were to have more money, even without value, I would assume it would be seen as more which gives it virtue.

  2. Money/wealth and virtue do play hand in hand. In today's society, more money does equal less virtue. Those who have money are usually more concerned about that money than they are doing what is right. However, one could also make the argument that, in order to "survive", those who do not have money must lower their virtue.

Therefore, I don't think that low virtue = wealth, but I do believe that typically wealth = low virtue.

  3. Like Tyler said, most people who are very wealthy tend to only be concerned about their money and materialistic things. So, for the most part, more money usually equals less virtue.
